Anyone who has driven a car knows the importance (and fun) of easy steering, whether it be on a slick interstate highway or a dirt road through a mountain wilderness. The steering column is essential in this regard, and connects the steering wheel itself to the mechanism below that actually turns the tires. When a driver turns the steering wheel, he/she transfers force (torque) through the column to the wheels below, which effectively allows for right-hand and left-hand turns and hence keeps the vehicle safely on the road in which it is being driven.
